16 national parks in Indonesia closed amid COVID-19 outbreak

The Environment and Forestry Ministry has temporarily closed 16 national parks and nature tourism parks across the country to minimize the spread of the coronavirus.

Wiratno, director general of natural resource and ecosystem conservation (KSDAE), said to kompas.com that the closures were in effect since Monday for some parks.

He said the ministry was not yet able to determine when some of the parks would welcome visitors again, as it still had to consider the governors’ and regents’ policies on each park.

Wiratno acknowledged that the number of visitors at national parks has been dwindling.

“There have been very few travelers in the parks that are still open. I think the public has realized the importance of social distancing,” he said.

He urged park managers to be on alert and to close parks immediately should any visitor show early symptoms of the disease. There were also call centers for visitor inquiries, he added.

Below is the list of the temporarily closed parks. (wng)
