Jokowi to deliver virtual address at 75th UN General Assembly

Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) is scheduled to deliver his address at the 75th United Nations General Assembly through a virtual platform.

"(The president) will be delivering a taped video address in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic," Head of the Presidential Secretariat Budi Hartono stated in Jakarta, Tuesday.

President Jokowi's speech will be his first since taking office as president of Indonesia, as earlier, during the first term of 2014-2019, Vice President Jusuf Kalla had delivered the speech to represent Indonesia at the international forum.

"The Indonesian president has been allocated a slot on the first day (on September 2), the afternoon session of New York time, estimated at around 20:30 p.m. local time or 7:30 a.m. West Indonesia Time (WIB) on September 23, 2020," he stated.

President Jokowi will deliver a speech at the General Debate session held to convey the views of country leaders in the world.

The speech session is part of a series of high-ranking world official meetings at the United Nations held from September 21 to October 2 virtually owing to the COVID-19 pandemic situation.

This year's UN General Assembly will be held both in person and virtually for the first time.

A cap is in place on the number of delegates allowed to physically attend, while high-ranking officials will deliver pre-recorded messages.

In addition to the president, scheduled to deliver a speech, several ministers will attend a series of events during the 75th session of the UN General Assembly virtually, including the foreign affairs minister, environment and forestry minister, and women's empowerment and child protection minister.

Apart from President Jokowi, Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno Marsudi, Minister of Environment and Forestry Siti Nurbaya, and Minister of Women Empowerment and Child Protection I Gusti Ayu Bintang Darmawati will also be delivering their addresses virtually. <s/p>
